Braille and Reading Instruction
The Memphis City Schools has three elementary level resource rooms for children with visual impairments. These rooms provide intensive daily intervention for students who have specialized visual needs. The support services are provided in addition to the regular classroom program. Resource rooms are located at Dunn Elementary, Georgia Avenue Elementary, and Treadwell Elementary.

Twelve Itinerant teachers serve the needs of children with visual impairments throughout the Memphis City School District. These students attend their legal schools and participate in regular and special classes according to their individual needs. Itinerant teachers provide specialized instruction to the students and consultation/support to classroom teachers. A wide array of services is available through the Itinerant program, including adapted materials (large print, braille and/or audio textbooks, etc.) that allow these children with visual impairments to compete with their sighted peers.
Pre-School Program for students aged three through six years old if offered at Hanley Elementary. Young students in this program are prepared for entry into the regular school program through educational and fun learning experiences.
Travel/Orientation and Mobility
Two Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Instructors provide travel training for students throughout the District. Instruction includes concept development and exposure to a variety of experiences in independent travel. These services are provided to blind and visually impaired students by qualified personnel to enable those students to attain systematic orientation to and safe movement within their environments.
