Under the Federal Act to Promote the Education of the Blind of 1879, APH is the official supplier of educational materials for visually impaired students working at less than college level in the United States and its Outlying Areas. Funds appropriated under the Act are used by each state to purchase educational materials from APH.
APH also offers a variety of materials for sale to individuals. APH maintains the Tactile Graphics Image Library database; and the LOUIS Database, a listing of publications in accessible formats from a number of agencies; and the Accessible Media Producers database, a listing of volunteers and agencies who publish materials in an accessible format.
The Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind features a history of APH and the development of educational materials for people who are visually impaired. APH sponsors National Instructional Partnerships, a series of workshops held across the United States. Additionally, the field's Hall of Fame: Leaders and Legends of the Blindness Field is housed at APH.

Services for Children
- Braille and Reading Instruction
- Provides a wide variety of products used in the teaching and learning of braille. An example is "On the Way to Literacy" a set of storybooks designed to increase preliteracy skills for children who are blind or visually impaired.
- Education Services
- Administers Federal Quota accounts designated for the purchase of educational materials under the federal Act to Promote the Education of the Blind of 1879. APH develops and manufactures hundreds of educational products, tools, and supplies that support students who are visually impaired.
- Information and Referral
- APH offers many services that support our products. Through the National Instructional Partnerships, APH partners with organizations in the field of blindness to sponsor instruction in specific areas of blindness and visual impairment as they relate to the use of APH products. APH provides Louis, a database that allows teachers, parents, and students to locate thousands of textbooks in braille, large print, recorded, and computer disc formats available from producers across the United States.
