I'm Dr. Karen Blankenship, and I am the National Agenda Professional Co-chair.

What are the three things that you want to ensure that parents know about self-determination?

I think the three most important things that parents should realize about self-determination is that it's a key indicator for success for their child. Self-determination skills allow a child to understand their strengths and weaknesses and then have a game plan to compensate for any weaknesses that the child identifies. A child with good self-determination skills will be persistent and never give up. And these same skills will carry over into every aspect of that child's life—professional, educational, personal. They are just lifelong skills that will benefit the child.
