I'm Dr. Karen Blankenship, and I am the National Agenda Professional Co-chair.

What do you believe professionals should do to help parents teach, and reinforce, the teaching of raising self-reliant children?

I think professionals have a responsibility—since this is a relatively new area of the expanded core—and although families are going to know immediately about what we're talking about—but probably conveying some of the key messages of self-determination, such as having high expectations, giving students lots of experiences at home, and giving realistic feedback. Not always telling the child how wonderful they are but really give them realistic feedback.

And the number one message that a professional can convey to a family is never do for a child what they can do for themselves. They should always reinforce hard work to achieve their goals. And I think it's just important that professionals convey those messages to family and work collaboratively in teaching skills and reinforcing skills.
