New as well

Hi just wanted to let you know we are also new to this website and new to Achromatopsia.  We are foster parents and have a little girl 8mo old with A.  We are hoping to adopt her and her sister.  Process takes a long time.  Anyway she has just gotten a vision therapist.  He is not familiar with A but I know he will do his best with finding information.  What advice do any of you have for me and my family in regards to an infant with A?  Do you all remember when your little ones were little and what toys you used or what things helped you manage?  We seem to be doing okay.  It is hard to know what she does see and not see.  I know the older she gets the more distinguishable all will be.  Thanks so much.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the site. You have come to the right place, we have lots of really experienced folks posting on this forum and am sure you will get a lot of suggestions about toys. In general, she will show you by her interest what kind of toys she is most attracted to. Young kids with visual impairment usually love toys that talk or make noise.

    Hi!

    Welcome! My son is now 13yrs. old and thinking back when he was little he did not play with special toys we bought him what ever characters he was into. I did the same for him as I did for his sister that is not visually impaired. When he was younger I bought him a Fisher pricer cassette player which has big buttons and he loved listening to book on tapes and songs. But when they are toddlers everthing has big buttons for their small fingers. It's when they get older that's you see the issues come up.

    My son has taught me that he wants to be treated like any other kid. Just bare in mind that every milestone in their life presents a different challenge I think more so for us parents. Right now I am dealing with the teenage issues like hanging out going out alone and driving.

    Hi,

    I just joined too. My son will be 12 years old on Wednesday. Time flies! As for suggestions, my son really liked glittery things -- his teacher from the Blind Babies Foundation brought a red glittery pom-pom and he enjoyed playing with it. She also brought things that had lights or sounds. He loved music so anything that played music and had lights also were a big hit for him. He also liked books -- they have glittery books too. Books where you press a button and they play a song were fun too. Good luck!
