JORDY,CCTV,LAPTOPS

My daughter is in 2nd grade and has bl optic atrophy.  She utilizes a CCTV in the classroom.  She had a Jordu but doesn't utilize it too often.  

What does your child use, do you have any suggestions or feedback?

    My son is now 11 years old and he used a CCTV for quite some time. In the 4th grade we realized he needs braille because the words are too big. When you read a word one letter at a time and it has 10 letters it is too hard to read in print. So we are working on learning braille. He also uses Plex Talk. It is a dvd player, all his textbooks are on dvd, so he can follow along with his teacher during instruction.

    Think Robin has pointed out the limitations of the cctv. If a person is reading letter by letter - s/he is "decoding" not really reading. It depends on the size of the font that is needed, the bigger the font, the fewer the words and the less like reading it is. Think they may be great for some folks who don't need much enlargement or for reading recipes or instructions on packages, but for many it is not really reading.

    I'm interested in the Plex Talk? How does he like it? Does it show print and say the text?

    My son is 15 and in his first year of high school 3rd year in public school system. He uses the cctv sometimes but has a hard time with it because he has to be right next to the screen to read it. He also uses a braille note which connects to the computer. It reads what he types so he knows when he has made a mistake. It is print on the screen and it prints what he types. so that I can read the stories he writes. Though LeRoy uses both print and braille (and prefers to read print) I think that it is important for visually impaired kids to learn both as when they get older they may not have the vision and it is easier to learn at a younger age.

    Hi,
    Sounds as though you have found a very workable system by using dual mediums of instruction for your son. I have known a number of folks with low vision who use both systems.

    Hi Kerry,
    I am sorry I have not responded sooner. Life is so busy. I wish I would of pushed Braille more when my son was younger because he is really having difficulty reading it now, he can type it all day but struggles with sensory processing. He does most everything audio. The Plex Talk is a glorified cd player, but it can advance thru chapters and pages, it is designed to use with the schools text book. We just purchased a Victor Stream and this is a very beneficial tool for him right now. We are in the process of getting a braille note because all of homework is done in braille. I would love to talk more but I am at work right now. My email is robin48877@yahoo.com, feel free to communicate directly by email. It is really nice to find someone to talk with who is experiencing the same things we are. Most kids and or families we are in touch with have totally blind children and beleive it or not life is so different for a visually impaired child as compared to someone who is totally blind.     I did not mean to exclude you from my last post. I realized it after I reread my post. I am really interested in communicating with you as well as your son is older than mine, and hopefully you would have some experiences for me as well. Does your son have Optic atrophy??
