IEP not being followed

My son has 20/200 vision and in his IEP there were several things metion, perferred seating and material enlarged so he could see it.  He is in the First Grade.  We had to go to the school the second day of school and get them to change his seating and was told he would have the materials needed.  One week later no change, we have talked to the principal and she assured us this would be taken care of and still not  a change. My son wants to learn but is not being given a chance.

    Hi,
    Have things improved at all? If not, you need to go to the director of special education for your district and tell her/him that your son's school is "out of compliance." If the director of special ed doesn't immediately take action to fix it, ask for a statement of your rights and a listing of local groups that you can go to for help.

    after alot of emailing and phone calls and meeting, they are starting to complie, I also have DARs working with me now. I also was given the greastet book emotions to advovcay to read and I have learn so much, but the fight is far from over. thank you and have a great day

    Glad things are improving for your child at school. Unfortunately, you will need to be vigilant and stay on tope of what is happening. Don't forget, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil". This is especially true in Special Education.

    you are so right about the squeaky wheel. I will be the squeaky wheel if that is what it takes. my son and daughters education is the most important thing to us without and education where will they be. thanks so much for your comments, its nice to know there are people who care.

    I, too, have a first grader with extremely low vision. We went through exactly what you are going through last year in kindergarten. As uncomfortable as it might make you, go straight to the top! I called a meeting with our school district superintendent, the district special ed coordinator and everyone else who is involved in his education. I had carefully read our rights, what our child was entitled to, and had a very honest discussion about what was going to happen if things didn't change. (In our district, if the school fails to provide the service outlined in his IEP, we have the right to send him to PRIVATE school and THEY have to pay for it!!!). It is difficult to be your child's advocate, but let me give you a glimpse of what this year looks like in contrast: he has a dedicated para-professional for whenever he needs help in any area outside the classroom (PE, music, library, computer lab), he has 60 minutes of weekly training time one-one-one with a vision therapist (on using low-vision tools, keyboard training, etc), he has preferred seating in EVERY aspect of school, he has large print materials for everything, he has a high-contrast large-key keyboard for computer lab, he has been provided duplicate low vision tools for home use (dome magnifier, monocular, high contrast keyboard), and lastly, a large flat-screen monitor has been ordered to be placed on his desk to work in connection w/ the classroom's document camera (so that what the teacher is writing on the overhead will be displayed directly on the screen in front of him at his desk!). He is FINALLY equipped to participate in a "seeing" classroom and he is off to a great start. We even held an in-service last week...to demonstrate all of the equipment to the other children and answer their questions about his vision impairment...so that the other children wouldn't be scared or intimidated by the "stuff." It was AWESOME! :) The kids even tried on low-vision glasses and tried to read with some of the magnifiers so they could try to "see what he sees."

    DON'T give up...you CAN make a difference! Educate yourself completely with your district's Special Education policies and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Believe me...a well-educated, well-informed CALM parent is a VERY persuasive one!

    I am so sorry that your IEP hasent done his/her job. I am so blessed with the one we have. My son who is now 11 ( we found out 2 years ago he had Stargardt) .From the first day, his IEP came to the school to meet with my son ,made sure my sons needs were/are being met at the school. He meets with him each week. He is always making sure my son is sitting in the right place, and has the right reading material if needed. I guess the only issue we have had was with a couple of teachers, whom I took as they didnt believe my son had anything wrong with his eyes as his grades are high and his reading skills are above his grade level. I do hope the school gets off their high horse and get things done that need to be done for your child. Every child needs to be encouraged to want to learn.
