Continental Style Eating

At the LCA conference this last July, in one of the round table discussions, it was suggested that VI children use the above mentioned style of eating, which I totally agree with, though haven't thought of!  My mom and her husband (English) eat this way, but trying to figure out how to teach my children, both VI, 3 1/2 and almost 2, has been tricky.  Luckily my mom's friends in England have offered my pointers, but this is from the sighted viewpoint.  

I'm just wondering if there are adjustments we need to make or can they adopt the style fully?  I appreciate these kind of suggestions, but a little help finding the answers would be so helpful as well!!

    Hi,
    I have seen a number of adults who are blind or low vision use this technique. I think it has two big advantages: 1. you don't have to switch the fork from hand to hand 2. you get to use the knife as a pusher. I will check with some of the folks I know and see if there are any tips.

    Thanks Judith! I talked with one of my mom's English friends and she starts her kids just as we do here, then once they conquer the fork, she starts teaching them the cont. style, so that really helped alleviate alot of anxiety for me. So, my almost 4 year old isn't "behind" like I worried, we are at the right stage to start learning it.

    Glad you got the info you needed. Please keep us posted as how her continental eating skills develop. Think more parents should know about this as a possible technique for eating.
