Contact Lenses

I need help.  I have a daughter who was diagnoses with a catract at birth.  She had surgery at 4 weeks old and the put a contact lense in at that time.  She kept a guard over her eye for 5 weeks after the surgery, and we can finally see both eyes again.  Patching the good eye was very difficult when her bad eye was also covered with a metal guard.  She has lost 2 contacts already because they are too big for her eye.  She is wearing the silasoft lenses, and they just don't seem to fit on her eye properly .  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I feel like we put her through this trama of sergery at such a young age, and now we can not follow through and get her bad eye to work properly.  I don't want to do all this and still have her blind in that eye.  Any suggestions?

    Did you call the doc the base curve may not be right. Look if you find it you can still use it. Yahoo Groups has a large group called aphakic look us up and join us. it get easier my little girl is 2 and the we hardly ever loss them now but we she was younger we lost a few..

    Mdutcher - think you really need to call MD and explain what is happening. She may need to be refitted.

    I have talked to the doctor, and even gone to a "contact" specialist. They say because she is so small there isn't a contact that will fit her. They said when she is about 6-8 months old the contacts will probably fit better. In the meantime, I guess we can dish out thousands of dollars on contact lenses. I might call for another opinion.

    Hi. My daughter had the same problem. After many tries and lots of lost hard and soft contacts our opthamologist allowed her to start with the really thick glasses. It was not optimal, however she began crawling and walking shortly after cataract removal surgery. She has just recently had artificial intraoccular lens implants put in at the age of two. Our doctor said sometimes kids just do not handle contacts well.

    I did get an eyeglass script the last time I went in. She is still only 3 months old, so it might be hard to fit the glasses. We were also told it was not ideal, but better than nothing. Our doctor wants to go as long as possible before putting in a new lense to reduce the number of surgeries she will have in her life. I guess we will see how it goes. We are still fairly new at all this.

    I would suggest giving the glasses a try. They may be better than nothing. You might check with eye doc as to where would be a good place to go for the glasses.

    Hi there,

    My daughter Emma was born with bilateral congenital cataracts. she had her ops at 7 and 8wks and had the contact lenses fitted. She is now 10months old. To start with the contact lenses stayed in until they were due to be changed, but after that she was rubbing her eyes and they kept coming out. It has been a very difficult few months, but it really is worth it as she is coming on leaps and bounds. I have had to learn to put the contacts in for her myself as it is hard to keep going to the opticians all the time (especially as she has a twin sister and an older brother who have to come with us). It is very difficult to get the lenses in, but practice and it does get slightly easier. The thing to think about is that your child will have the best possible chance of vision with the lenses in.
    I think you should speak to your ophthalmologist again about the lenses and also discuss it with your optician. Our optician said for us that the glasses are not an option at present as they would be ridiculously thick and do not move with her eyes.
    I hope this helps a little. Keep your chin up, what your doing is worth it, and your child will thank you in the long run.

    My daughter had her glaucoma op at 10 weeks and her catact op at 12, she has a contact lense fitted at 16 weeks, but it was very difficult to keep it in, we also asked for glasses as well! We got both, she is now onto her 4th pair of glasses and recently we were able to get her prescription sunglasses to! Get her the glasses, they make tiny tiny baby ones that curl around their ears, they are so cute, and then they get bigger ones when they get older! We are finding it impossible with the contact lense now she is 15 months, her eye muscles are so strong she closes her eye so tight we physically can't get it in most days! even when she is asleep! So she wears her glasses those days!
