How to help parents?

I am a new TVI and would love to be able to help my students parent's.  I have a grade school student who has multiple disablities who still sleeps with her parents/grandparents every night.  They also do everything for him, feeding him, etc.  They do not work on independence.  How can I help them to loose their fear of him being independent, as much as he can?  Is there any books, videos, etc. to help the?

    First of all are there any cultural issues involved? Some cultures view their children with disabilities much differently than others. You need to be aware to their beliefs. The best way would be to bring them and the child together with a family who has a child with a similar condition who is doing more for himself. Sometimes folks have to see things in the flesh before they believe you.

    Thank you. I hadn't thought about the cultural aspect. I will try two get two families together to see if they help. Thank you again. I do know one of the issues is getting the child to stay in his bed. Are there any suggests for railings or just consistency of staying I bed?

    Do all the adults agree that he should be sleeping in his own bed? Some families believe in a "family bed." Don't think you will have any luck unless all the adults involved really want to make this change.
