Communication

Communication, being able to express oneself and participating in the give-and-take of conversation, is an important area of development for children with visual impairments and multiple disabilities. All children are communicators from the moment they make a face, smile, utter their first cry, or gurgle with pleasure. It's never too early to begin exploring ways in which you can support your child's development of the ability to communicate. In this section you can find information on different symbol systems, augmentative and alternative communication devices, systems for sharing information about scheduled or routine events, and more. The wider the range of communication options your child has an opportunity to try, the more likely he will be to find systems that allow him to share his thoughts with others.
