Guide to Achieve Program
The Guide to Achieve program is one of two brand new youth employment initiatives being offered at the Chicago Lighthouse. In this program, youth (ages 17-21) who are blind or visually impaired have the opportunity to not only receive assistance in job placement, but also will receive guidance from a peer mentor, a young adult who is also blind or visually impaired. It is our belief that the partnership that we create with employers through our youth employment specialist, in conjunction with the applied on-the-job monitoring and assistance from a job coach / peer mentor, will prove beneficial in curbing the statistic of blind and visually impaired adults unemployed in the United States. The unemployment rate of these adults is around 70% and 40% respectively. The program is also providing monthly workshops addressing key issues that often stand in the way of young people securing employment. Topics of these workshops include resume writing, advocacy, career exploration, and goal setting, among many others. In addition, the Guide to Achieve Program has established a partnership with the Hadley School for the Blind, which will allow clients to enroll in training courses as a supplement to our service. The entire program is free and open to all blind and visually impaired youth residing in the state of Illinois.
